Research projects & supervision summary

Associate Professor Harnett currently leads an active program of research, including higher degree research projects spanning complementary medicine safety, clinical microbiome science, and integrative medicine practices. She supervises Honours, Masters, and PhD candidates working across these themes.

Complementary Medicine Safety & Pharmacy Practice

Projects include preventing and identifying drug–herb and drug–nutrient interactions in primary care, including a technology‑enabled intervention for community pharmacies. She also investigates pharmacists’ roles in nutrition counselling, the impact of complementary medicine training in pharmacy practice, and international models for integrating complementary medicines into pharmacy care.

Integrative Medicine Practices (cancer management and secondary stroke prevention)

Current studies examine the quality and safety of cannabis‑based product use among people living with cancer, beneficial interactions between complementary medicines and cancer treatments, and the safe use of herbal and nutritional supplements in secondary stroke prevention.

Microbiome & Gut–Oral Health Science

Current clinical microbiome research explores oral and gastrointestinal microbiome associations with fibromyalgia and iron deficiency, including clinical trials on probiotics and oral health.
