BIO

Dr Joanna Harnett is an Associate Professor within the Sydney Pharmacy School - Faculty of Medicine and Health, where she conducts research and teaching in the broader area of traditional and complementary medicines, and the role of the gastrointestinal microbiome in health and disease. Her research aligns with the World Health Organisations Traditional Medicine policy of 'promoting the safe and effective use of Traditional and Complementary Medicine through the regulation, research and integration of T&CM products, practices and practitioners into the health systems as appropriate.' Her central focus is to contribute to fostering the appropriate and safe use of complementary medicines and building the evidence base, including the role of natural products in gastrointestinal health (probiotics and prebiotics). Joanna is a senior fellow of the International Research Leadership Program with the Australian Research Consortium in Complementary and Integrative Medicine. She is a minister appointed Chair of the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration Advisory Committee on Complementary Medicines and board member of the International Society of Traditional Complementary and Integrative Medicine Research, and the Naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia.
