LEARNING & TEACHING SUMMARy

Deb supervises higher degree students and teaches in both the Bachelor of Education and Master of Teaching programs, specialising in English primary education. Her teaching focuses on language and literacy development, particularly in young children, emphasising the socio-cultural nature of literacy. Students engage with speaking and listening, reading and writing, and other modes of communication in relation to curriculum requirements and effective classroom practice.

Her teaching develops foundational knowledge and practical skills in reading and writing pedagogy, assessment principles, literacy planning, and classroom teaching strategies. Her units also enhance students’ engagement with quality children’s literature and other high-interest texts, providing a basis for evidence-informed approaches to teaching reading and writing.

Deb is actively involved in the Teacher Development Program (TDP), which provides academic tutors with the opportunity to explore guiding principles and expectations about how students learn best and how teaching can most effectively support learning, drawing on current evidence-based research. Each semester, the program welcomes tutors from schools and disciplines across the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS).

In recognition of her outstanding contribution to teaching and student learning, Deb received the 2022 Excellence in Teaching award—her second teaching excellence award.
