RESEARCH INTERESTs
Deb's principal research interests lie in literacy within the early and primary years of formal schooling, both in Australia and globally. Her work focuses on innovative pedagogies for developing children’s writing and exploring creative approaches to text production. Deb actively collaborates on research across Australia, spanning observational studies of classroom writing environments and teacher pedagogies, longitudinal investigations into teachers’ curriculum-making practices, and mixed-method studies of new reading and writing pedagogic tools for teachers.
She is deeply engaged in exploring how teachers and preservice teachers use children’s literature to translate the formal curriculum into meaningful lesson sequences, supporting the development of children’s reading and writing knowledge and skills.
In addition, Deb investigates teacher and learner identity, including reading and writing identities, through the analysis of classroom artefacts and innovative learning contexts such as AI-supported literacy tutoring programs for tweens and teens. Her work bridges theory and practice, aiming to inform high-quality, responsive, and personalised literacy pedagogy in early and primary education.
