RESEARCH INTERESTs

Dr Januszewski’s research interests centre on translational biomarker research in diabetes, cardiovascular disease and related complications. His work combines laboratory-based biomarker measurement, clinical trial datasets, epidemiology and biostatistical modelling to identify factors associated with disease progression, treatment response and long-term outcomes.

Specific areas of interest include:

  • biomarkers of diabetes complications, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and diabetic retinopathy
  • molecular and biochemical markers, including inflammatory, endothelial, oxidative stress, lipid, microRNA and genetic markers
  • insulin resistance and partial clinical remission in type 1 diabetes
  • long-term outcomes and biomarker studies in major diabetes trials, including FIELD, T4DM and FAME 1 Eye
  • socioeconomic and geographic determinants of health outcomes
  • development of online tools for socioeconomic classification, biomarker interpretation and research translation
  • use of clinical trial biobanks to support secondary analyses and future translational research
