Research projects & supervision summary

Dr Januszewski’s research projects focus on the use of clinical trial biospecimens, biomarker data and long-term outcome datasets to better understand diabetes, cardiovascular disease and related complications. His work includes studies of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, diabetic retinopathy, kidney disease, cardiovascular outcomes, insulin resistance, residual insulin secretion, inflammation, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, lipid biology and molecular markers of disease progression or treatment response.

He has contributed to biomarker and secondary analyses from major diabetes and cardiovascular trial cohorts, including FIELD, T4DM, FAME 1 Eye, DCCT/EDIC-related collaborations and other national and international studies. These projects combine laboratory measurements with clinical trial data to investigate disease mechanisms, identify predictors of complications, and examine variation in treatment effects.

His research also includes the development and application of laboratory methods for measuring biochemical, molecular and genetic markers in stored clinical trial samples. These include assays related to inflammatory, oxidative stress, endothelial, lipid, renal, retinal, proteomic, microRNA and metabolic pathways. In addition, he contributes to clinical trial biobank governance, sample selection, laboratory workflow development, data interpretation and manuscript preparation.

Alongside laboratory and clinical trial research, Dr Januszewski develops and maintains digital tools that translate clinical, statistical and geospatial methods into accessible resources for clinical and epidemiological research. These include calculators for insulin sensitivity, partial clinical remission and diabetic retinopathy, together with Australian and New Zealand socio-economic index lookup tools.

He supervises and mentors Honours, Master’s and PhD students, visiting scholars, summer scholarship students, research assistants and postdoctoral researchers. His supervision covers biomarker study design, laboratory methods, clinical trial biobank research, data analysis, scientific writing and research translation.
