BIO
Ali Khoddami, Senior Lecturer in Food Science, serves as the Course Coordinator for Food Product Development and teaches various courses, including Food Processing and Value Adding, Future Foods, and Food and Water Security. Ali is a dedicated food and agriculture researcher with industry experience, and a researcher specialising in sustainable food systems, climate change, value addition to food waste, functional foods, and chemical food safety.
He completed his PhD in 2016 with a project on polyphenolic compounds in different sorghum cultivars grown across Australia at The University of Sydney. From 2017 to 2020, he worked as a Research Fellow at the same university on projects funded by the Grain Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) to explore expanding options for sorghum, and he also contributed to casual lecturing.
In 2020, Ali became a lecturer at the University of Sydney, teaching in BSc and MSc programmes and conducting fundamental research. He has demonstrated strong relationship-building skills at all levels, providing teaching and valuable advice to undergraduate and postgraduate students and visiting scholars. His efforts earned him several awards, including the Good Mentor and the Faculty of Science's Learning and Teaching Award for Early Career Teacher.
In 2026, he was promoted to senior lecturer in recognition of his substantial contributions to teaching, research, and leadership. Since 2017, he has been involved in various research grants as a chief or partner investigator, including "Food quality of Australian indigenous grains: Impacts of plant environment" (Australian Research Council- Discovery Project), "Fruits and Vegetables for Sustainable Diets" (one-CGIAR & IFPRI), "Feeding chickens in the future - The potential of heat-tolerant wheat" (School of Life and Environmental Sciences/Strategic Partnership Seeding Grant), and "Effects of Crop Production under Heat Stress and High Atmospheric CO2 on the Food Grain Chemistry of Wheat, Barley and Chickpea" (Bruce Veness Chandler Fund).
