RESEARCH INTERESTs

Professor Ali Abbas's research in Process Systems Engineering aims at enhancing our understanding of complex processes across multiple scales - from industrial systems like power plants to biological systems within the human body - enabling their optimisation to improve human health and environmental sustainability.

"I am deeply interested in the intricate behaviours and interactions of systems operating across different scales, whether in chemical industries or biomedical contexts. My goal is to translate these insights into real technologies and tangible solutions, addressing significant societal challenges."

Ali's research spans several core areas:

  • Circular Economy and Sustainability Transitions
    • Development and implementation of circular economy frameworks and principles.
    • Waste-to-resource technologies, waste transformation, and recycling innovation.
    • Industrial ecology and circular supply chains to reduce resource consumption and waste.
  • Circular Systems Engineering (CSE)
    • Advancing integrated engineering approaches specifically designed for circular economy applications.
    • Development of systems-level solutions for resource recovery, recycling, and regenerative design.
    • Methodological innovations in life-cycle thinking and sustainability-driven systems engineering.
  • Process Systems Engineering and Multiscale Modelling
    • Advanced computational modelling of chemical, energy, and biological processes.
    • Process intensification, integration, and optimisation methodologies.
    • Multi-scale predictive simulations and design of optimal operating strategies.
  • Clean Energy Systems and Low-Emission Technologies
    • Renewable energy integration, including solar thermal and hybrid renewable energy systems.
    • Carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technologies.
    • Decarbonisation strategies for industrial processes and urban energy infrastructure.

"In my research on low-emissions technologies, I explore sustainable methods for fossil fuel use, such as integrating carbon capture technologies or hybridising fossil-powered systems with renewable energy, to reduce environmental impact while maintaining reliability and efficiency."

  • Techno-economic and Lifecycle Analysis
    • Economic feasibility, risk assessment, and lifecycle environmental impact analyses.
    • Policy integration and market-based solutions for carbon management and emissions trading.
    • Comprehensive techno-economic assessments of innovative sustainability technologies.

"This line of research has led to systematic methods for identifying working fluids and materials with targeted properties, significantly enhancing processes such as heat transfer in solar collectors, refrigeration in liquefied natural gas (LNG) production, carbon capture solvents, and gas separation membranes. For instance, we have successfully developed membranes capable of challenging separations, like distinguishing hydrogen from nitrogen molecules with very similar size and shape."

  • Sustainable Materials Engineering
    • Valorisation of industrial by-products into sustainable construction and advanced materials.
    • Green chemistry and eco-friendly chemical manufacturing processes.
    • Development of nanostructured phase-change materials for sustainable construction.
  • Biotechnology and Bioengineering Applications
    • Microbial bioconversion and biodegradation of plastic wastes.
    • Bio-based pathways for renewable chemical and energy production.
    • Bioprocess engineering and optimisation.

Professor Abbas's research is increasingly focused on addressing pressing social and environmental problems through integrated engineering and systemic innovation. He emphasises the role of engineering in developing solutions that are environmentally sustainable, economically viable, and socially responsible.

Ali's passion for knowledge, science, and learning extends deeply into his educational philosophy, continually fostering curiosity and enthusiasm among students and the broader community.

"My journey at the University of Sydney began as a student in 1997. I completed my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees here, returning in 2007 as an academic staff member. This institution has provided me invaluable opportunities and mentorship, continuously inspiring my commitment to research and education."

Through his research, Professor Abbas seeks to drive meaningful advancements that are not only scientifically robust but also practically relevant to solving real-world social and environmental challenges.
