LEARNING & TEACHING SUMMARy

Professor Ali Abbas is deeply committed to high-quality education, driven by a strong passion for knowledge, scientific inquiry, and the professional growth of students. His teaching philosophy emphasises active and experiential learning, critical thinking, and the practical relevance of engineering education to real-world challenges. He is particularly interested in experiential learning methodologies and the effective integration of contemporary technologies into practical engineering laboratories, ensuring students engage hands-on with real-world engineering practices.

Ali currently coordinates and teaches the following units at the University of Sydney:

  • CHNG3802 - Process Dynamics and Control
    • This unit provides students with an in-depth understanding of dynamic process behaviour, process modelling, and advanced control system design. Students gain practical skills in analysing and predicting the responses of chemical processes and designing sophisticated control strategies critical to modern chemical process industries. Contemporary teaching in this unit includes the application of AI techniques to enhance process optimisation, control performance, and decision-making capabilities, ensuring graduates are equipped with the latest industry-relevant technologies.
  • CHNG5001 - Digital Circular Economy
    • The first tertiary-level course in Australia specifically focused on the circular economy. This innovative unit covers circular economy principles, sustainability-driven business models, lifecycle thinking, and digital strategies to drive circular transitions in industry and society.

Previously, Ali has also taught and coordinated the following units:

  • CHNG3801- Process Design
  • CHNG3802- Operating/Improving Industrial Systems
  • CHNG5001- Process Systems Engineering
  • CHNG5801- Foundations of Process Design
  • CHNG5802- Foundations of Operating and Improving Industrial Systems
  • ENGG5202- Sustainable Design, Engineering & Management

Ali actively supervises PhD and Masters research students across diverse areas including process systems engineering, clean energy technologies, circular economy solutions, sustainable materials, biotechnology, and systems modelling. His mentorship fosters a collaborative, curiosity-driven research environment where students engage deeply with interdisciplinary problems of global significance.

Beyond traditional teaching, Ali places significant focus on regional education and industry-linked training initiatives, supporting skills development and professional reskilling through tailored microcredentials in circular economy and advanced process control. He champions the "Brains-back-to-the-bush" vision, promoting knowledge transfer and regional empowerment through innovative, locally relevant educational programmes.

Ali is passionate about cultivating future research and industry leaders who are technically proficient, innovative, and socially conscious. His sustained commitment to educational innovation and impactful supervision has been recognised by several awards, including the Sydney Research Accelerator (SOAR) Fellowship, underscoring his dedication to research leadership and teaching excellence.
