BIO

PhD (Adelaide)

Rebecca Johinke's work is wide ranging and interdisciplinary, but it is grounded in literary and rhetorical studies and has always included a strong focus on gender and popular culture. She regularly writes about representations of masculinity and femininity in Ozploitation films like the Mad Max franchise. Her interests include Australian literature (especially creative nonfiction and memoir), film, music and popular culture; writing and rhetoric (print and digital magazines, journalism, media and communication, academic writing); street narratives (from representations of masculine car cultures to literary and cultural tourism and the flaneur). Her first book about Australian magazine editors and about disruption of the media and traditional magazine journalism, entitled Queens of Print, was published by Australian Scholarly Publishing in 2019. She also conducts research about the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (student leadership, assessment and feedback, student support, and the first-year experience).

In addition to conducting teaching and research, for the last decade she has held a number of leadership positions in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Those positions include: Chair, Discipline of English, Associate Dean Student Affairs, Associate Dean Student Life, Degree Director of the Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She has previously served as Chief Examiner for HSC Extension English (NSW Board of Studies/NESA). She was the English Honours Coordinator in 2021-2022.
