Research projects & supervision summary

I regularly publish in the area of Australian film and about cars and masculinities. I have recently published two book chapters in edited collections. The first is an essay about Mad Max: Fury Road and science fiction from the 1950s. The second is about gender and the representation of the female motor-bike riding protagonist in the Australian rape revenge film Shame (and its American re-make). I have a journal article about the Ozploitation film Patrick appearing in a special issue about disabilities in Antipodes in late 2023.

I am an active researcher in magazine studies. I published a book of interviews with iconic Australian magazine editors in late 2019 entitled Queens of Print. in that book I also examine the changing publishing environment and the move from print to digital. Another recent magazine-related essay appeared in 2022 in an edited collection about magazines. My contribution examines the representation of writer Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City. In recent times I have been researching the intersection between print and digital in publications like Net-a-Porter's PORTER magazine. I have also been analysing representations of magazine editors and magazines in popular culture in television series like Dietland and The Bold Type. in 2023, I am assembling an edited collection on this topic.

I have also recently commenced a new project about sexologist Dr Norman Haire's magazine columns for Australian magazine Woman in the late 1940s.

I am often working on various papers about street narratives and cultural tourism. My interest in music and popular culture intersects with this work on walking in the city. I've previously published journal articles about psychogeography and the flaneur. When on study leave, I take walking tours in major cities like London and New York. In 2018, I published a piece about cultural tourism and a punk music walking tour in New York. When last on study leave in 2019, I gathered material about a punk walking tour in London's Soho and about cultural tourism in New York and Sex and the City.

I have an active research interest in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. I recently co-edited a special issue about digital writing in the post-Covid world for the Journal of Teaching & Learning Practice.
