RESEARCH INTERESTs

My research explores how the structure of materials controls the way they behave. I focus on mesoscale materials, whose internal structures are much larger than atoms and molecules, but still smaller than what we normally see by eye. These materials include bone, wood, carbon fibre composites, geomaterials including soil and rocks.

To understand these complex systems, I work at the interface of physics, engineering, mathematics and biology. I combine experiments, x-ray imaging, simulations and modelling to study how materials deform, fail, flow and function under different conditions.

This work helps solve real world problems in environmental science, biomedical engineering and advanced materials design. Current applications include CO₂ geosequestration, bone implants, digital orthopaedics, adaptive manufacturing and mechanical metamaterials.

My research interests include soft matter physics, cellular solids, granular materials, biological materials, design optimisation, topological materials, mechanical metamaterials, structure-property relationships, tomographic imaging, material modelling and geological CO₂ storage.
