Research projects & supervision summary

Mike Seymour leads an interdisciplinary research program focused on the design, governance, and societal impact of AI-driven Digital Humans. Through the Motus Lab, he supervises HDR students and research staff working across artificial intelligence, human–computer interaction, Information Systems, and immersive technologies.

His current projects include an Australian Research Council Discovery Project investigating Digital Humans as a mixed-reality solution to real-world racism; an Emerging Scholar Research Fellowship developing adaptive AI assistants to support people living with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI); and a range of industry-engaged Digital Human research projects examining trust, communication, and human–AI interaction. He also leads research into the ethics and governance of deepfakes and synthetic media, the role of plural value systems in Information Systems research, and Action Design Research projects exploring immersive training environments, including the use of Apple Vision Pro technologies in education and professional training.

Mike works closely with HDR students, industry partners, clinicians, community organisations, and international collaborators, using Design Science Research, Action Design Research, and co-design approaches to generate both rigorous scholarship and real-world impact. His supervision philosophy emphasises intellectual independence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of research that contributes to academia, industry, and society.
