RESEARCH INTERESTs
Mike Seymour’s research focuses on realistic AI-driven Digital Humans and how people interact with, trust, and respond to intelligent technologies. As Co-founder of the Motus Lab at the University of Sydney Business School, he leads interdisciplinary research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, human–computer interaction, and Information Systems. His work spans three major domains: Media and Entertainment, where he explores new forms of storytelling and digital experiences; Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), where he develops adaptive digital assistants to support communication and wellbeing; and Anti-Racism, where he investigates how immersive technologies and digital humans can help reduce prejudice and improve intergroup understanding. Through close collaboration with industry, government, clinicians, and community partners, his research seeks to ensure that advanced AI technologies are not only innovative, but also ethical, trustworthy, and capable of delivering meaningful societal impact.
In addition to these substantive research areas, Mike has a strong interest in engaged research methodologies, particularly Action Design Research (ADR), Design Science Research (DSR), and co-design approaches. His work explores how researchers can collaborate with stakeholders to build, evaluate, and refine novel technologies in real-world settings while simultaneously generating rigorous theoretical contributions. He is particularly interested in advancing methodological approaches that bridge academic scholarship and practice, enabling research that is both scientifically rigorous and directly relevant to industry, organisations, and society.
