Research projects & supervision summary

I have supervised 26 PhD students and numerous Masters and undergraduate research students.

My current research projects fall in 2 categories: Human-AI co-creativity and AI Literacy.

AI models that inspire novel ideas. Computational co-creative systems in design enable users to collaborate with an AI partner on open-ended creative tasks in the design process.

Interaction design for co-creative systems. In a creative collaboration, communication is an essential component among collaborators.

Computational novelty to encourage curiosity. Computational models of novelty in large datasets of documents can be measured using various NLP models of similarity, distance, and co-occurrence.

Ethical issue for users of co-creative AI. The role of co-creative AI is a complex one depending on the partnership. Because co-creative AI is a form of intelligent technology that directly involves humans and has an impact on human creativity, it is critical to anticipate and address ethical issues during all design stages.

The development, assessment, and impact of AI literacy. The goal is to enable individuals to evaluate AI technologies critically; communicate and collaborate effectively with AI; responsibly use AI as a tool, and effectively manage their education and professional roles in the age of AI.
