LEARNING & TEACHING SUMMARy

Professor Bleasel is a clinical educator who has been involved in education across the medical spectrum.  As Head of the Department of Rheumatology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, she oversaw the teaching of medical students, prevocational doctors, Basic Physician Trainees and Advanced Trainees in Rheumatology.  She has mentored many young doctors in Rheumatology.

 

She completed a Master in Health Professional Education (Monash University) and was awarded Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK).  Professor Bleasel led a major innovative redesign of the Sydney Medical Program “MD2020”- She has advised a number of medical schools on curriculum design and has led accreditation teams for the Australian Medical Council.  Between 2022 - 2025 she was Dean of the Joint Medical Program and her initiatives included; the establishment of a framework for a 'Flexible Learning in Place' pathway to study medicine for rural healthcare workers embedded in their rural community and the introduction of Assistant in Nursing training for year 2 medical students, a collaboration between the University, Hunter New England Local Health District and TAFE.

 

She returned to the University of Sydney as Head of School and Dean of Sydney Medical School in March 2025.  Her interests include increasing flexibility in the MD program, equity in selection and admission and rural training pathways.
