RESEARCH INTERESTs

Ioana A. Dumitru is a digital landscape archaeologist whose research explores climate change, social resilience, human cooperation, and societal transformation across eastern Africa and Arabia. Combining archaeology with GIScience, LiDAR, remote sensing, and social network analysis (SNA), she investigates long-term human-environment interactions, mobility, settlement change, and responses to extreme climatic events. Her work integrates large-scale geospatial datasets with archaeological and environmental evidence to develop comparative approaches to resilience, sustainability, and past social networks across the Indian Ocean world.

She currently leads the CALOR (Dynamic Coasts and Landscapes of Resilience) project in Tanzania, which investigates migration, coastal adaptation, and social resilience to climatic and environmental change along the Swahili coast using archaeology, LiDAR, and digital spatial methods.
