SERVICE & LEADERSHIP SUMMARy
Dr Hamish Fernando is the Learning and Teaching Director for the School of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Sydney, where he leads education strategy across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. In this role, he oversees curriculum development, assessment coherence, and pedagogical innovation, working closely with academic staff to ensure teaching practices remain rigorous, inclusive, and aligned with the evolving needs of the biomedical engineering discipline.
At the faculty level, Dr Fernando serves as the Faculty of Engineering’s AI and Assessment Lead. In this capacity, he provides strategic guidance on the integration of generative AI into teaching and assessment, supporting academics to adopt AI in ways that are ethical, evidence-based, and educationally sound. This work includes contributing to faculty-wide policy, professional development, and the design of AI-resilient assessment frameworks.
Dr Fernando is also a Distinguished Fellowship Advisor for the Higher Education Academy (HEA) within the University of Sydney, where he mentors and supports academic staff seeking professional recognition for their teaching practice. Through this role, he contributes to building institutional capacity and a shared culture of reflective, evidence-informed teaching.
In addition, he is an active member of the Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AAIEEC), contributing to the broader engineering education community through scholarship, collaboration, and engagement with sector-wide conversations on teaching, assessment, and educational innovation.
