RESEARCH INTERESTs
Dr Fernando’s research sits at the intersection of physiology, metabolic disease, engineering education, and artificial intelligence. His early work focused on physiological mechanisms relevant to human performance, metabolism, and neuromuscular function, contributing to the understanding of how biological systems adapt under stress and altered conditions.
More recently, his research has expanded into engineering education and AI, with a particular focus on:
- Strategic and ethical use of generative AI in higher education
- AI-enhanced and AI-resilient assessment design
- Large-cohort assessment, feedback, and academic integrity
- Scenario-based and authentic learning design in biomedical engineering
- Student understanding, misuse, and trust in AI-supported educational systems
His education-focused research has been published in peer-reviewed engineering and STEM education journals and presented at national and international conferences, with an emphasis on practical implementation rather than theoretical abstraction.
