BIO
Associate Professor Gustavo Machado is a leading physiotherapist, health services researcher, and advocate for evidence-based reform in musculoskeletal and emergency care. He holds prestigious fellowships from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC EL2 Investigator) and The University of Sydney (Robinson Fellow). Based at the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health, he leads an innovative research program transforming how back pain and musculoskeletal conditions are managed across emergency, hospital and virtual care settings.
He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals such as Lancet, BMJ, Lancet Rheumatology, JAMA Health Forum, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, British Journal of Sports Medicine and Annals of Emergency Medicine, with over 6,500 citations. Associate Professor Machado is recognised in the World’s Top 2% of Scientists (Stanford/Elsevier) and among the Top 15 Global Experts in back pain (Expertscape) and his research has directly informed 107 national and international policy documents across 17 countries (Overton).
