LEARNING & TEACHING SUMMARy
Chris Fox coordinated Architecture Studio 1A (BDES1026), the architecture program's largest and most foundational design studio, with cohorts of 280 students and 18 tutors per year. He has coordinated this unit since 2014, developing a structured, research-led pedagogy that supports equitable transition into studio-based learning at scale.
His teaching is research-led, integrating computational design methods, fabrication processes, and real-world civic project contexts into studio learning. In collaboration with Dr Michael Mossman, the Gujaga Foundation, and the Gamay Rangers, he has embedded Country-centred design frameworks and site-based learning on Gamay (Botany Bay) into foundational studio teaching, supporting students to develop culturally responsible approaches to design from the outset of the degree.
Fox also leads and mentors a large rotating cohort of sessional tutors through a community-of-practice model — structured induction, weekly coordination, shared resources, and formal moderation — that supports both consistency of delivery and the development of early-career educators.
Current and recent unit coordinations:
• BDES1026 Architecture Studio 1A — Year 1 core (2014–2024); 260–280 students; coordinator
• BDES3026 Architecture Studio 3A — Year 3 (2025); 220 students; studio teaching, curriculum, assessment
