SERVICE & LEADERSHIP

  • MEDIA

Chris Fox and the Rozelle Interchange project are featured in The Australian Financial Review article “Vertical gardens: urban oasis or costly façade?” by Emma McGrath-Cohen (Apr 13, 2026), examining the opportunities and challenges of vertical green wall systems in urban infrastructure. The article reflects on the ambition of integrating greenery into dense city environments, while highlighting the complexity of long-term performance and maintenance. At Rozelle, Chris Fox led the design of the ventilation stack cladding, balancing environmental intent with structural and practical constraints. “It’s about the transition from construction into operation. A large amount of technical and design information is developed, and ensuring it carries through into long-term maintenance as responsibilities shift is a key challenge on projects of this scale,” Fox says. The feature situates the project within broader discussions on sustainability, infrastructure, and the realities of maintaining complex living systems in the public domain.

Chris Fox and Yuxiao Wang were invited by Powerhouse Museum to facilitate Imagine a City: Drawing Workshop as part of Sydney Design Week 2023 at Powerhouse Ultimo, Gadigal Land. The workshop used archival research and planning documentation for the Powerhouse building to examine how two original smoke stacks had been concealed within the museum envelope, inviting participants to speculate on alternative civic futures in which these structures were retained. Drawing on Studio Chris Fox’s recent work at Rozelle Bay as a precedent, participants developed proposals for sculptural interventions, dimensional surface treatments and new relationships between infrastructure, public space and urban storytelling.
