Research projects & supervision summary

My current research projects include:

  • The Surreal Body as Theatre of the Mind: Women, Surrealism and Contemporary Visual Culture
This project examines how contemporary women artists engage with surrealism to explore the body as a site of psychological, affective, and political meaning. It includes a symposium (https://www.thesurrealbodysymposium.com/) and a special issue in an academic journal, and considers how surrealist strategies challenge normative representations of gender and subjectivity in visual culture today.
  • Uncanny Maternal: Surrealism and Contemporary Photomedia
This research explores how contemporary photomedia artists engage with surrealist strategies to challenge normative representations of motherhood and femininity. Focusing on the uncanny and the transformation of the everyday, it explores how their work reimagines the maternal as a site of psychological and affective complexity in contemporary visual culture.
