RESEARCH INTERESTs

Tonia's research program uses her expertise in qualitative and sociolinguistic discourse analysis methods. She has two areas of focus:

  • Healthcare interactions & communication with marginalised communities and/or CALD backgrounds, more recently focusing on inclusive disaster risk reduction.
  • Nurse education in relation to supporting students from CALD backgrounds through academic English support and interactive teaching methods.

 

Her PhD research examined intercultural communication in health care settings and the place of communication-based interactions between nurses from CALD backgrounds and their patients in achieving safe practice.
