Tim Newsome was appointed Lecturer at the University of Sydney in 2007 (School of Molecular and Microbial Bioscience), with key leadership responsibilities in the areas of virology research and teaching. He was made Senior Lecturer in 2012 (School of Molecular Bioscience), and Associate Professor in 2019 (School of Life and Environmental Sciences).

 

Tim Newsome was awarded his PhD in 'Entwicklungsneurobiologie' from the University of Zurich in 2000. For his post-doc he entered the world of virology and cell biology in the lab of Michael Way in 2001 at Cancer Research UK, London. He established his independent research lab in 2007 at the University of Sydney. He uses advanced light microscopy, genetic manipulation of viral genomes, and protein biochemistry to address new questions in host/pathogen interactions using vaccinia virus, other poxviruses, and coronaviruses. He has a particular fondness for the TGF-beta signalling pathway.
