SERVICE & LEADERSHIP SUMMARy

Fernandes has played a leading role in programs of racial justice and equity at the University of Sydney. In 2020, she founded the Racial Justice and the Curriculum group (RJC). which seeks to foreground Indigenous knowledges and histories, and material relating to colonialism, race, and racism across the curriculum. She received two consecutive grants from One Sydney Many People (OSMP) to do a review of the SSPS curriculum and together with an Indigenous HDR student Alicia Johnson produced a report, a teaching support guide, and a teaching materials packet to assist colleagues in diversifying their teaching. She is also founder and coordinator of a mentorship program for First Nations academics and people of colour academics at the University of Sydney

Fernandes is the convenor of an event series, Land Justice and Climate Futures, which aims to bring together Indigenous and people of color scholars, writers, and activists to examine questions of land justice at a time of mass labor migration and climate crisis.
