RESEARCH INTERESTs

Sally's  research interests include improving the effects of and access to pulmonary rehablitation for people with for people living with chronic respiratory conditions, digital health as an alternative mode of delivering pulmonary rehabilitation and pre-operative exercise training in people with lung cancer. Sally's PhD work titled “Exercise training in COPD: walking tests and walking training” was the first globally to develop an equation to estimate the speed for the endurance shuttle walking test directly from the six-minute walking test. As part of her PhD work Sally conducted the first large multisite longitudinal RCT that provided strong scientific evidence of the effectiveness of ground-based walking training in people with COPD with the results included in the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand’s best practice management (COPD-X) guidelines. Sally is a co-author on the first Australian and New Zealand specific Pulmonary Rehabilitation Guidelines. Sally recently led (CIA) a multi-site RCT demonstrating the equivalence, acceptability and cost savings associated with providing a digital pulmonary rehabilitation program (m-PRTM) compared to standard centre-based care.
