BIO

Professor Salah Sukkarieh is a recognised leader in robotics and autonomous systems. His work spans the development of intelligent robotic platforms for complex outdoor environments, with particular focus on agriculture, the environment, aerospace, disaster response, and humanitarian engineering. He has led large-scale, industry-funded projects and collaborated globally across research and commercial domains. His current research interests include autonomy, machine learning, and the integration of digital and physical systems to support sustainable, scalable innovation. Professor Sukkarieh is a Fellow of the IEEE and ATSE, and a recipient of multiple national and international awards for his contributions to robotics research and translation.

As Professor of Robotics and Intelligent Systems at the University of Sydney, he has authored over 500 academic and industry publications, establishing a substantial body of scholarly work that addresses both theoretical and applied challenges in field robotics. His research has contributed significantly to autonomous navigation, perception systems, and machine learning applications for field robots in unstructured environments.

From 2007 to 2018, Professor Sukkarieh served as Director of Research and Innovation at the Australian Centre for Field Robotics, where he guided strategic research initiatives and cultivated industry partnerships that expanded the centre's research capacity and impact to become one of the largest in the world. Under his leadership, the centre developed numerous technologies that advanced the field while addressing practical industry challenges.

Professor Sukkarieh's commitment to research translation led him to serve as CEO of Agerris (2019-2022), an AgTech company developed from research at the ACFR. This experience in research commercialisation has informed his approach to developing technologies that bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and field implementation.

As principal investigator, he has secured over $70 million in research funding through collaborative partnerships with industry and government. These collaborations span diverse sectors including mining (Rio Tinto), aviation (Qantas), logistics (Patrick Stevedores), agriculture (HIA, MLA, GRDC), first response (NSWRFS) and environmental monitoring (state and government agencies), demonstrating the broad applicability of his research methodologies.

His scholarly contributions and leadership have been recognised through numerous distinctions, including his election as Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) and Fellow of the IEEE. Additional honours include the NSW Science and Engineering Award (2014), Engineers Australia's Most Innovative Engineer (2016), the CSIRO Eureka Prize for Leadership in Innovation and Science (2017), and recognition among Engineers Australia's Centenary Heroes (2019). He was a finalist for NSW Australian of the Year in 2019 and received the International CEATS Communication Prize in 2022.

Throughout his career, Professor Sukkarieh has maintained a balance between advancing fundamental research and developing methodologies that address complex societal and industrial challenges, particularly in agricultural productivity, environmental sustainability, and autonomous systems safety.
