BIO

Paul Stanhope is an award-winning Australian composer whose music is celebrated for its lyrical intensity, rhythmic vitality and deeply human connection. A graduate of the University of Sydney, Stanhope pursued postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music in London before returning to Australia, where he has become a leading figure in contemporary composition and music education.

 

His works span orchestral, chamber, choral and solo repertoire, and have been performed by major ensembles including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, The Australian Chamber Orchestra and internationally by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. His music often engages with humanitarian concerns and the natural environment, with works such as Jandamarra: Sing for the Country exemplifying his interest in cultural dialogue and storytelling.

 

Stanhope has been awarded numerous awards, including the prestigious Toru Takemitsu Prize, the Paul Lowin Song Cycle award and five APRA/Australian Music Centre Art awards. He is an Associate Professor of Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, a former Music Director of the Sydney Chamber Choir and current Artistic Chair of the Australia Ensemble.
