LEARNING & TEACHING SUMMARy

I currently coordinate two first-year postgraduate units: NURS5002 Social Contexts of Health (Semester 1, ~180 students) and NURS5085 Mental Health Nursing (Semester 2, ~170 students). This sequencing enables me to influence students’ academic and professional development as they transition into postgraduate study, strengthening critical enquiry and nursing identity. The cohort is diverse, encompassing a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, cultures, and levels of academic preparedness. Many are mature-aged and manage competing work, family, and financial commitments. These realities demand an inclusive, scaffolded, and empathetic teaching approach that values equity, accessibility, and student well-being.

As unit coordinator, I lead a teaching team of continuing and casual academics, overseeing curriculum design, assessment development, moderation, and quality enhancement. I provide mentoring and professional development for colleagues, particularly casual staff transitioning from clinical to academic roles, supported by consistent, student-centred pedagogy and reflective practice.

My teaching philosophy is grounded in person-centred, recovery-oriented, and strength-based approaches. I view teaching as a relational, dialogic process where knowledge is co-constructed through reflection, interaction, and application to practice. This approach promotes learner autonomy, inclusivity, and critical thinking, aligning with the university’s education principles and the UKPSF values of respect, diversity, and evidence-based practice.
