Title: Political Economy
Summary of opportunity:
Political Economy at the University of Sydney is taught by the largest grouping of political economists at any Australian university. It is recognised as a leading centre of economic analysis and research.
Opportunity synopsis:
Political Economy asserts that economic processes do not take place in isolation from social and political processes. Political economy studies the dynamics of globalisation and the implications for national economic policy; the concentration of economic activity, wealth and opportunities; the trade-offs between health, education and equity; the free market arguments; environmental sustainability; the decline and development of regional economies; and debates over development and economic rights. Political Economy publishes the highly regarded Journal of Australian Political Economy and attracts significant research funding from ARC and other sources. Research and publication is concentrated on non-neoclassical economic theory, Australian economic and social policy, international trade and development, the nature of work, urbanisation and regional development, and global integration.

Project Opportunities
Title: Political economy and social theory
Summary of opportunity:
My research interests are at the intersection of political economy and social theory. I have published books on the historical development of American finance; the psychological dimensions of money and capitalism; neoliberalism; risk and speculation in financial governance; and the contemporary asset economy. My current research is on the way logics of asset ownership are transforming contemporary capitalism, which is linked to my SOAR fellowship “Towards a democracy of asset-owners?”, the FASS Strategic Research Theme “Asset ownership and the new inequality” (which I co-direct with Lisa Adkins and Gareth Bryant), the ARC-funded project “Inequality in Australia: Housing in the asset society” (with Lisa Adkins and Dallas Rogers), the AHURI-funded project “Pathways to home ownership in an age of uncertainty” (with Laurence Troy, Lisa Adkins, Gareth Bryant, Caitlin Buckle), as well as my 2021-2022 Berggruen USC fellowship. I am Editor-in-Chief of Distinktion: Journal of Social Theory, and with Stefan Eich I edit a series, Currencies: New Thinking for Financial Times, published by Stanford University Press. Prospective research students are welcome to contact me to discuss their projects.
