ProfessorMarkus Muellner

Markus Müllner (Dr. rer. nat. (Bayreuth); FRACI CChem, FHEA) is a Professor of Polymer Chemistry and Deputy Head of the School of Chemistry at The University of Sydney, Australia.

Professor Müllner leads the Polymer Nanostructures Group in the Key Centre for Polymers & Colloids. His research group has extensive expertise in the synthesis and application of molecular polymer bottlebrushes. His research interests span a variety of polymer-related topics, from the synthesis of polymer architectures and their use in self-assembly and nanomedicine applications, to photocatalysis in polymer design and nanostructured materials for energy applications. 

Professor Müllner studied polymer and colloid chemistry at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, where he also received his PhD in polymer chemistry. He reliquished his McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellowship from the University of Melbourne in 2015, to join the School of Chemistry and the Key Centre for Polymers and Colloids at the University of Sydney. He has held an Australian Research Council DECRA (2018-2020) and Future Fellowship (2021-2025). His research contributions have been recognised through the 2018 Vice-Chancellor's Award for Early Career Research, the 2021 Rennie Memorial Medal by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI), and the 2023 USyd SOAR Fellowship. Markus is a Fellow of RACI and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. 

Professor Müllner is an experienced leader in the higher education sector. He held a number of significant leadership positions, including Australian Research Council College of Experts (2024-2026), Associate Head of School for Research (2022-2025), Director of Postgraduate Admissions and Postgraduate Coordinator for Chemistry (2020-2022), Intermediate Chemistry Lab Director (2018-2020) and Sydney Nano International Ambassdor for Europe (2022-23). From 2019-2022 he was Chair of the RACI Polymer group in New South Wales.
