BIO
Malmi Amadoru is a lecturer in Business Information Systems at The University of Sydney Business School. She obtained her PhD in Information Systems at the Queensland University of Technology. Malmi won the second runner-up of the ACM SIGMIS Doctoral Dissertation Award and the ACPHIS PhD Medal for her dissertation in 2022. Before joining the University of Sydney, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at HEC Montreal.
Malmi is a researcher at the intersection of digital technology, discourse, and society. Her work investigates how the narratives, debates, moral emotions, and meaning-making processes surrounding emerging digital technologies shape the trajectories of their diffusion and ultimately, how they are adopted, rejected, or transformed within organisations and society at large. She also examines the role of autonomous AI agents in shaping online discourse, exploring how human and algorithmic actors co-construct meaning, influence collective behaviour, and contribute to the emergence of new social orders within online communities. To explore these questions, Malmi brings together computational and qualitative methods in a creative and rigorous combination that enables both large-scale analysis and deep theoretical insight. She is at the forefront of computationally intensive theory construction and is well recognised as an expert in the information systems community, pushing the boundaries of how scholars develop theory using computational methods.
Malmi's research agenda spans three interrelated areas: (1) discursive processes of technology diffusion, (2) the role of social media and autonomous AI agents in shaping discourses, and (3) computational approaches to IS/management research. Her work appears in prestigious journals such as the Information Systems Journal and conferences such as the International Conference on Information Systems and the Academy of Management.
