BIO

Lucy Marshall is Deputy Vice Chancellor (Community and Leadership), and a Professor in the School of Civil Engineering. Prior to joining the University of Sydney, Lucy was the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Macquarie University. Her expertise is in hydrology and water resources, environmental model optimisation and quantification of uncertainty in water resources analysis. She is a leading Australian expert on the assessment of uncertainty in water resources engineering, and more specifically in the application of Bayesian methods for model inference and calibration.

Lucy's research background is deeply rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration. She was an ARC Future Fellow from 2013 to 2018 at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), served as the Associate Dean of Engineering (Equity and Diversity) from 2018 to 2021 and was the Director of the Water Research Centre from 2020 to 2022. From 2020 to 2025, Lucy held the role of Deputy Director of the ARC Training Centre in Data Analytics for Resources and Environments.

Lucy is proud to be a Fellow of the Modelling and Simulation Society of Australia and New Zealand (MSSANZ), and in 2020 was honoured with the Biennial Medal of the International Environmental Modelling and Software Society for Excellence in Research.

She has a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UNSW, where she also completed her Master of Engineering Science and Bachelor of Civil Engineering. In 2025, Lucy received the Judy Raper Award for Leadership in the UNSW Women in Engineering Awards.

Throughout her career, Lucy has led cross-institutional initiatives that enhance the student experience and maximise research impact - work that continues to inspire and drive her every day.
