SERVICE & LEADERSHIP SUMMARy

Dr Campbell contributes to her research community through peer review, conference service, and student development. She has peer-reviewed manuscripts for BMC Veterinary Research, PLoS Pathogens, and Frontiers in Genetics, and served as a session co-chair at the Australian Society for Microbiology 2025 meeting. She is currently co-organising the Wildlife and Comparative Immunology Consortium meeting (WACI 2027), to be hosted at Taronga Zoo in Sydney. Dr Campbell has acted as oral and poster presentation judge at several international and national conferences, including the International Society of Developmental and Comparative Immunology, the Australian Society for Microbiology, the Australian Poultry Science Symposium, and ImmuNet Research Day. She has supervised or mentored eleven undergraduate research students across honours, project, and independent study placements, and is open to supervising DVM and undergraduate honours students. Beyond academia, she has contributed sustained volunteer service to animal welfare through Zoe's Animal Rescue.

Creation of Koala Organ-Specific Cell Lines for Disease and Therapeutic Testing
    1 Dec 2025
This grant supports the development of the first immortalised koala cell lines, providing essential tools for comparative immunology and wildlife disease research. To date, only a single finite koala primary cell line has been published and no immortalised koala lines exist, leaving koalas without basic in vitro resources for studying infection, immunity, or tissue physiology. The project tests whether the high rates of spontaneous immortalisation observed in wombat fibroblast and kidney epithelial cultures can be reproduced in koala cells, providing proof-of-principle for consistent immortalisation across marsupial species and establishing a foundation for future host–pathogen and marsupial cell biology research.
