Leadership

Before Katina took on the role of MBA Program Director at the University of Sydney, she was a joint professor in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society and School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence where she was also the Director of the Center for Engineering, Policy and Society (CEPS) and a Senior Global Futures Scientist at Arizona State University. She was also the Associate Dean International of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences at the University of Wollongong among other roles, and spent most of her industry experience as a Senior Network and Business Planner at Nortel Networks from the mid-90s to the dot.com. Along the way she has also taught sessional classes at the Singapore Institute of Management and Toulouse Business School. She has held visiting academic appointments at Nanjing University, Southampton University, and Newcastle University in the UK. 

 

Professional Service

Katina has been a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for more than two decades. She has held numerous voluntary roles associated with the IEEE Society on the Social Implications of Technology (SSIT), IEEE Standards Association (SA), and more recently the IEEE Consumer Technology Society (CTSoc). She has been a board member of the Australian Privacy Foundation (APF) since 2008, and also a Consumers' Representative for the Consumers' Federation of Australia (CFA). Katina was also an ELSI panelist for DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) on the ADAPTER (ADvanced Acclimation and Protection Tool for Environmental Readiness) project in the Biological Technologies Office (BTO) between 2021 and 2024. Since 2024 she has also been a fellow of the Social Cyber Institute (SCI).

Katina has contributed to the following standards development efforts in various roles:

Editorial Responsibilities

During her time in academia, Katina discovered her love for editing. She was a technical editor for the Journal of Theoretical and Applied Electronic Commerce Research (JTAER) from 2005-2010, an editor of Elsevier's Computers & Security (2010-2012), an associate editor at Springer's Social Network Analysis and Mining (2012-2014), the editor-in-chief for the IEEE Technology and Society Magazine for two terms (2012-2017), and the founding editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Technology and Society (2020-2025).

Human Factors Series of Workshops

In 2006 Katina established the Human Factors Series Workshop titled The Social Implications of National Security as part of the Centre of Excellence - Research Network for a Secure Australia (RNSA). The Workshop Series was funded by multiple CoE for the first 6 years, inclusive of the Center of Excellence in Policy and Security (CEPS). By 2013 the series went global and was rebranded as SINS, the acronym of the workshop series title. Four edited books were produced between 2006 and 2009, several special issue proceedings in journals, among other milestones.

Colloquia

At Arizona State University, Katina began the inaugural Public Interest Technology Colloquium which ran for four seasons between 2020 and 2023. The Colloquium highlighted inter-/trans-disciplinary research from around the world, attracting scholars and practitioners to present and respond to questions from the audience on how best to address global challenges given the complexity of modern systems. The PIT Colloquium featured more than 100 speakers, and hundreds of participants across this multi-year series.
