Justine Humphry is an Associate Professor of Digital Cultures in the Discipline of Media and Communications at the University of Sydney. They are also the Deputy Head of School (Research) of the School of Art, Communication and English. Justine researches the cultures and politics of digital media and emerging technologies with a focus on the social consequences of mobile, smart and data-driven technologies. Their research addresses digital inequalities, young people and digital media, mediation of home/homelessness, public space and urban datafication.
Justine was the Chief Investigator of research on homelessness and mobile connectivity for the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (from 2013-14) and for the Young and Well Cooperative Research Centre (from 2015-16). She co-led the Smart Publics USyd/Glasgow partnership collaboration (from 2019-20) and led the Emerging Online Safety Issues project (2022-24) funded by the Online Safety Grants Program of the Office of the eSafety Commissioner. Justine is a CI on the multi-university project Implications of data hunger in housing: protecting Australian renters (2024-2025) focusing on datafication in social housing, funded by the Australian Housing Urban Research Institute and a CI on the an Australian Institute of Criminology funded project looking at the effect of social media on youth crime. Their book, Homelessness and Mobile communication - Precariously Connected, draws on empirical research conductd in Australia and the US to frame homelessness as a mediated condition and investigatoes how mobile phones and internet access are essential for people experiencing homelessness, yet the access they obtain is often unstable, expensive, and precarious.
