BIO
Dr Joachim Worthington is a mathematician and epidemiologist working on mathematical methods and modelling to assess health system policy, focusing on liver and colorectal/bowel cancer.
He graduated with a PhD in Applied Mathematics at the University of Sydney in 2017. Over 2017-2025, he worked at Cancer Council NSW in a policy research role to inform state and national governments on the impact and costs of cancer control. He is currently in the School of Public Health in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, and closely collaborates with researchers from the School of Mathematics and Statistics in the Faculty of Science.
His research synthesises epidemiological and economic data using techniques from dynamical systems modelling and Bayesian analysis, with findings informing Australian screening guidelines, national policy, and academic publications. He is particular interested in developing robust, scalable, and accessible methods for health economic modelling built on a foundation of mathematical rigor.
