Research projects & supervision summary

My current areas of focus include:
  • Developing efficient public health modelling methodologies: To improve my policy research, I have developed techniques in the representaiton and evaluation of compartment models as partial differential equations, to develop fast, deterministic ways to evaluate semi-Markov and related families of models. I plan to investigate extensions of this idea using spectral methods for fast evaluation and Bayesian methods for capturing parameter uncertainty.
  • Liver cancer surveillance and prevention: Working alongside A/Prof Eleonora Feletto and others in the School of Public Health to estimate the health impacts and cost-effectiveness of routine surveillance to detect liver cancers early. I have also researched the potential impact of prevention activities such as weight loss and alcohol cessation on Australian liver cancer rates. This research informed the Clinical practice guidelines for hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance for people at high risk in Australia.
  • Developing mathematical methods to assess bias in epidemiological data: Working alongside Prof. Peter Kim in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, I am working to develop new approaches to assessing the potential impact of effects like immortal time bias in epidemiological data.
  • Colorectal (bowel) cancer screening: Working alongisde A/Prof Eleonora Feletto, Dr Jie-Bin Lew, and others in the School of Public Health to evaluate and update colorectal cancer screening recommendations in Australia. I have worked with government agencies, including the Department of Health and Aged Care and the Cancer Institute NSW, to assess the imapct of changes to screening on health system resources and outcomes.
  • Malignancy and aging: Assessing the impact of age and frailty on liver cancer surveillance. Led by Dr Karen Waller and Dr Emily He.
