LEARNING & TEACHING SUMMARy

Hala Zeriqat has created innovative units of study which include lectures from leading researchers both within and outside the University of Sydney to provide insights into the most recent advances in their fields. In the last 3 years she has conducted course coordination, administration and curriculum development for a total of 158 students (2020), 105 students (2018) and 98 students (2017). This includes scheduling, preparing and delivering lectures and tutorials, developing course outcomes and the tutorial structure, setting and marking all assessment tasks (e.g. group presentations, major individual assignments, final examination), inviting and responding to student feedback, and undertaking course reflection and re-design.

  • Under the auspices of the IDEAL Society, she coordinated a new course in 2020, Innovations for Global Education and Literacy (ENGD3004), which takes a multidisciplinary approach to addressing complex human challenges of the 21st century by engaging students with leaders, policy makers, and personnel in sustainable development and humanitarian aid. Through experiential learning and systems thinking approaches, students develop innovative solutions to advance gender equity and improve global education and literacy for women and girls. (2020 onwards)
  • Instigated, designed, coordinate and teach Tissue Engineering (BMET4971; undergraduate) and Applied Tissue Engineering (BMET9971; postgraduate) (2006 onwards). Both courses are now core subjects.
  • Instigated, designed and coordinated 4th year Biomedical Engineering elective courses Nanomaterials in Medicine (BMET5931) and Introduction to Mechanobiology (BMET5962) (2017 onwards)
  • Delivered a course in "Tissue Engineering and Turning Discoveries into Clinical products" (MECH 798J) to the Faculties of Engineering and Architecture and Medicine at the AUB. ACADEMIC TERM Spring 2012-13

Hala place considerable emphasis in my research group on training and mentoring early career postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. She also supervise and/or mentor undergraduates, visiting international students, and postgraduate students and researchers from other departments and universities. Many of her former PhD students and postdocs have gone on to take up key positions in academia and industry.
