Gary's research program is focused on understanding the ecology of animal diseases, with a focus on infectious diseases of horses. His research program has a strong industry focus on unravelling the interaction between microbes and the animal and the environment to help explain disease occurrence and suggest novel disease intervention strategies. Gary is recognised as a authority in Rhodococcus equi pneumonia epidemiology with a variety of research activities and outputs that have contributed to improved understanding of disease management and diagnoses as well as proposing various disease prevention strategies for the Thoroughbred industry.

Gary has a determination to make a meaningful contributions to the veterinary and animal science industry through research and teaching that will promote the health and wellbeing of animals whilst limiting the impact of diseases and insuring positive outcomes for humans that share the environment with animals.

Gary's research program continues to attracted research income from the Thoroughbred breeding industry and he has co-authored 40 peer-reviewed scientific publications and a book chapter describing a novel abortion syndrome in horses. Gary also is a frequent chair and presenter at the Australian Society of Microbiology annual conferences as well as the Equine Veterinary Australia Bain Fallon annual lectures.
