BIO
Edward Armstrong is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at The University of Sydney and Associate Lecturer at the Australian National University (both part time). His research focuses on political and courtroom speeches in the Ancient Mediterranean world, with a special focus on democracy, religion, and the law courts of ancient Greece.
Edward completed a PhD at the University of St Andrews after an MPhil. at the University of Sydney. In his doctoral research, Edward examined methods of characterisation through rhetoric in Thucydides' History with a focus on the deliberative speeches.
Immediately following his PhD, Edward was hosted as the Jacobi Fellow at the Kommission für Alte Geschichte und Epigraphik des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts (Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy of the German Archaeological Institute) in Munich. From the end of 2023, Edward held a Research Associateship with the British School at Athens, during which he worked on treaty texts in Classical Greek epigraphy and literature. From 2024-25, Edward held a Visiting Fellowship with the Centre for Classical Studies at the Australian National University.
