RESEARCH INTERESTs

Edward's research focuses on Classical Greek historiography, religion, philosophy (especially fifth-century sophistry), and rhetoric. His research interests encapsulate a range of Classical Greek genres and themes including ancient historiography, theatre and performance in Attic tragedy, narratology, ancient emotion, Classical Greek historians - especially Thucydides and Herodotus, ancient Greek religion, and the development of rhetoric.

Edward's chapter, Speaking of the Gods: Religious Belief in Thucydides, in the 2025 volume 'Belief and Unbelief in the Ancient World' (Eerdmans) challenges long-held views about what we can learn from Thucydides about ancient Greek religion and spurs us to consider the perspective of the ancient Greeks in the narrative.

During Edward's postdoctoral fellowship at The University of Sydney on Prof. Julia Kindt's ARC Discovery Project, Herodotus, Thucydides, and the 'Discovery' of Truth in Ancient Greece (DP250102223) from 2025 - 2028, he is researching the cultural and philosophical assumptions in the works of Herodotus and Thucydides, and in the Dissoi Logoi, especially those assumptions regarding truth which they share.
