RESEARCH INTERESTs
Synthetic Biology of Natural Products
The Bailey lab focuses on harnessing biology via the discovery of new chemical transformations from nature and the manipulation of biosynthetic pathways to create new complex molecules via heterologous expression. They essentially do chemistry within microorganisms. The Bailey Group focus on complex biosynthetic enzymes such as polyketide synthases and non-ribosomal peptide synthetases which biosynthesize therapeutic molecules, many of which are used in the clinic. This research has applications in medicine, sustainability, and expanded biomanufacturing.
Dr Bailey's research aligns with the Faculty of Science Research Strengths - Molecules to Materials, Preventing and Treating Disease & Disorder, Biodiversity Conservation, Next Generation Materials.
