RESEARCH INTERESTs

Dr. Anderson leads a team that studies and develops treatments for disorders affecting the cerebellum and basal ganglia. As both a neuroscientist and a biomedical engineer, his team includes neuroscientists, clinical neurologists, and biomedical engineers. Together, the group studies Christianson syndrome, spinocerebellar ataxias, Tourette syndrome, Parkinsonism, and essential tremor.

Prior to joining The University of Sydney, Dr. Anderson began his research career while completing his B.S. in Biomedical Enginering at The Johns Hopkins University, applying engineering principles within the context of molecular biological research. During this period, he carried out research on telomere-mediated lung disease under Professor Mary Armanios and Professor Carol Greider. Dr. Anderson joined Associate Professor Alan "Chuck" Dorval for doctoral studies in Biomedical Engineering at The University of Utah, studying the mechanisms of deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease. Dr. Anderson stayed at The University of Utah for his postdoctoral training, working with Professor Stefan Pulst on deep brain stimluation and gene discovery / gene therapy, while collaborating with Professor Marco Bortolato for work on Tourette syndrome.

Over the last 10 years, Dr. Anderson's research has attracted 12 research grants from various funding organisations, including the RTW Foundation, Rare Village Foundation, National Ataxia Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health - National Institute of Neurolgical Disorders and Stroke. Outside of his work at University of Sydney, Dr. Anderson is an International Partner in the new Cerebellum Science Center (Houston, Texas, USA) led by Roy Sillitoe, Javier Medina, and Huda Zoghbi (Baylor College of Medicine), and a co-founder of Lachie's Wish 4 CS.
