Dr Barnett contributes actively to the chemistry community through professional service, mentorship, outreach, and researcher development.
He serves on the ACS-Australia Committee and is the academic advisor to the University of Sydney Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society, the first ACS student chapter established in Australia. Through these roles he supports student development, professional networking, and engagement with the broader international chemistry community.

He has represented the NZI Committee at external engagement events and contributed to initiatives that strengthen connectivity across the Australian research community.
He previously served as Postdoctoral Representative of the Sydney University Chemical Society (SUCS), where he established the monthly PostDocSoc gatherings to promote collegiality, collaboration, and knowledge exchange amongst early-career researchers within the School of Chemistry.
His outreach activities include public lectures, chemistry demonstrations, and initiatives aimed at increasing awareness of sustainable chemical technologies and improving access to contemporary chemical research.
