RESEARCH INTERESTs

Previously an archaeologist with the United States Bureau of Land Management, Garrett's projects-past, present, and future-are united by a drive to uncover hidden, overlooked, and forgotten environments. Early work emphasized material excavation, whether terrestrial, underwater, or archival. More recently, his focus has shifted toward tracing social and cultural narratives through ethnographic immersion in contested spaces.

He is an advocate and practitioner of experimental geographies, employing creative and more-than-textual methodologies to capture how people experience place. This has included the use of photography, sound, and video, as well as the deployment of fixed-wing and quadcopter drones as agents of atmospheric inquiry. His film Points of Presence (2018), co-produced with Adam Fish and Oliver Case, traced undersea internet cables across the North Atlantic and screened at more than 20 international film festivals.

Garrett's complementary research interests span cities, infrastructure, politics, public space, research ethics, and volumetric urbanism. Taken together, his work consistently challenges disciplinary boundaries, combining cultural geography with art, architecture, and anthropology to reveal how societies imagine, inhabit, and contest the spaces above and below ground.
