LEARNING & TEACHING SUMMARy

Alex is a highly experienced research supervisor who has successfully supervised 40 PhD students to completion. His supervision spans soil science, pedometrics, digital soil mapping, precision agriculture, soil sensing, soil carbon sequestration, soil monitoring and soil security. Through his mentoring, he has contributed to the development of future leaders in soil science, digital agriculture and environmental management.

Alex’s teaching and supervision are closely connected to his research. He encourages students to engage with real-world questions about soil function, land capability, agricultural productivity, climate resilience, environmental monitoring and the long-term security of soil resources. His teaching in soil science has helped generate new research questions and has supported the translation of advanced soil science into practical applications for agriculture, sustainability and policy.

Alex has secured major competitive research funding from the Australian Research Council, including an ARC Australian Laureate Fellowship, as well as support from the United States Department of Agriculture, the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, and rural research and development corporations including the Cotton Research and Development Corporation and the Grains Research and Development Corporation.
