SERVICE & LEADERSHIP SUMMARy
Alex holds an NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellowship and has served as Executive Board Officer of the International Society for Viruses of Microbes (2021–2024), including co-organising the Viruses of Microbes 2024 conference in Cairns. The first ESCMID educational course on personalised phage therapy was coordinated by Alex (>120 participants from 34 countries), leading to a co-editorship of a Special Issue in Clinical Infectious Diseases. Standard operating procedures for therapeutic phage monitoring at Westmead were developed by Alex and adopted in Australia's first phage clinical trial (STAMP). Six undergraduate/MSc students and one PhD student have been supervised or co-supervised to completion, with PhD and MSc students currently co-supervised at the University of Sydney. Additional roles include Guest Editor for Cells, peer reviewer for multiple journals, registered HDR supervisor at the University of Sydney. Community engagement is maintained through high school career panels and the ACT Science Mentors. In 2019, phage testing was coordinated by Alex as part of an international collaborative effort to identify a therapeutic phage for a critically ill child, contributing to a treatment that saved the patient's leg from amputation.
