Project Opportunities

Title: Applied linguistics

Summary of opportunity:

Associate Professor Ahmar Mahboob is a globally recognised scholar in (applied) linguistics, known for his transformative work in decolonising (language) education and research. His career encompasses foundational contributions to the study of World Englishes and language and identity, which have evolved into his pioneering development of Subaltern Linguistics.

This paradigm is detailed in his influential volumes "Writings on Subaltern Practice" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) and "Subaltern Linguistics: A Toolkit for Alternative Education and Practice"( Routledge, 2024). His work challenges Eurocentric frameworks and promotes community-led, equitable language practices. He actively brings this theory to life through real-world projects and as the founder and driving force behind the Free Linguistics Conference (FLC), a major international forum that champions linguistic diversity and critical scholarship.

His research excellence has been widely recognised. He is a two-time recipient of the President of Pakistan's Award for highly qualified overseas academics and was named Australia's Research Field Leader in English Language and Literature in 2019.
